To recognize and honour Children and Youth in Care Day, York Region CAS hosted a picnic at Brooks Farms on May 13, 2026.

The event brought together approximately 100 attendees, including children, youth, caregivers, foster parents, and staff. It provided a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the resilience, strength, and individuality of young people in and from care.

Participants enjoyed a day of connection and celebration, with activities such as painting, henna tattoos, flower planting, and shared meals. These moments fostered a sense of community while creating space for joy, creativity, and belonging.

This year’s theme, Rising in Strength and Story, builds on past themes of Forget Me Not and Celebrating Little Wins. It reflects an ongoing commitment to recognizing that children and youth in care are not defined by the systems they navigate, but by their unique strengths, experiences, and achievements.

Children and Youth in Care Day also underscores the importance of amplifying youth voice. By listening to and learning from their lived experiences, we strengthen our ability to support positive outcomes and more inclusive communities.

At York Region CAS, this day serves as a reaffirmation of our commitment to ensuring young people feel seen, heard, and empowered to shape their own futures.

We extend our sincere thanks to Brooks Farms for hosting and to our Youth Events Committee and all who contributed to organizing this memorable event.
