In May, York Region CAS proudly celebrated Asian Heritage Month—a time dedicated to celebrating the rich histories, culture, and contributions of people of Asian descent that have enriched Canadian Society.

In line with this year’s theme, “Unity in Diversity: The Impact of Asian Communities in Shaping Canadian Identity,” York Region CAS hosted a variety of cultural-based activities such as Chai and Chats led by the Hong Fook Mental Health Association that highlighted learning opportunities for staff. These events encouraged reflection and connection, and aimed to educate staff on topics such as, “Parenting from a Chinese Perspective,” and “Intergenerational Trauma in the Chinese Community.”

The celebrations continued on May 30 where staff had the chance to take part in a lettuce wrap cooking class (an East Asian dish) and eat a West Asian lunch together.

By incorporating moments of meditation, food, dialogue, and cultural learning, these events offered staff opportunities to reflect on the importance of diversity, wellness, and inclusion in both their personal and professional lives.

May was also Jewish Heritage Month in Canada a time to recognize and celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of Jewish Canadians.  To mark the month, the Agency’s Jewish Employee Resource Group shared a message honouring the notable accomplishments Jewish Canadians have helped to shape the country’s history and society.
