On January 30, the York Region CAS BLACC Committee proudly hosted Hair Story, a vibrant and culturally affirming event celebrating Black identity, hair, self-care, and self-expression at our Agency’s head office in Newmarket.

The gathering was offered for Black-identifying and biracial children and youth, as well as foster parents, kinship and adoptive families, and allies. Staff were also warmly encouraged to attend and actively take part in the day.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in meaningful conversations about hair care and self-care, explored the cultural significance of Black hair, and enjoyed opportunities for haircuts and line-ups. Every aspect of the event was grounded in affirmation, pride, and care, reinforcing positive identity and belonging.

Hair Story served as a powerful reminder of the importance of creating culturally responsive spaces where Black children, youth, and families feel seen, celebrated, and supported. The BLACC Committee was honoured to host this impactful event and to begin Black History Month by uplifting community, culture, and connection.

Special thanks to our guest speakers Takiyah Wedderburn (Natural Kids Movement) and Yannick Francis (777 Hair Studio) and to Randy’s Jamaican Patties for the donation of delicious food.
