Every September, communities across Canada come together to recognize Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Month, with a dedicated awareness day on September 9. This month-long observance is an important opportunity to learn about FASD, support those affected, and promote awareness around the risks of alcohol use during pregnancy.

What is FASD?

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a lifelong disability that results from prenatal alcohol exposure. Individuals with FASD may experience a range of challenges, including difficulties with learning, memory, emotional regulation, and physical health. Many require ongoing support throughout their lives.

FASD Awareness Day is observed on September 9 (the ninth day of the ninth month) to highlight the importance of an alcohol-free pregnancy for the full nine months. While FASD Day has been recognized since 1999, the Government of Canada officially declared the entire month of September as FASD Awareness Month in 2020 to encourage year-round education and engagement.

2025 Theme: “Everyone Plays a Part: Take Action!”

This year’s theme emphasizes that everyone has a role to play in supporting individuals with FASD. Whether you’re a teacher, healthcare provider, policy-maker, parent, or community member, your actions can help build a more inclusive and understanding society. From educating yourself and others to advocating for better supports and services, every action matters.

How You Can Get Involved

  • Wear red on September 9 to show your support and raise awareness.
  • Join the conversation online using hashtags like #FASDMonth and #RedShoesRock.
  • Attend local events that promote education, advocacy, and community support.

York Region CAS invites the community to learn more about FASD Awareness Month as a chance to reflect and take meaningful action—because together, we can create a more informed and compassionate society for all those impacted by FASD.
