This week, we join other Agencies across the province in recognizing Kinship and Alternate Care Awareness Week—a time to acknowledge and celebrate the vital role that kin and alternate caregivers play in the lives of children, youth, and families.

Kin may include extended family members, close family friends, neighbours, teachers, or individuals who have a meaningful relationship with the child or youth. Alternate caregivers provide care through arrangements such as kin service, kin care, or customary care, often in collaboration with child welfare agencies. These caregivers are instrumental in providing safety, stability, and continuity for children and youth during challenging times.

Why this matters:
Provincial data continues to show that the majority of children and youth entering care are placed with kin or in customary care arrangements. These placements not only help maintain important cultural and community connections, but also reduce placement disruptions and contribute to better long-term outcomes.

As we mark this important week, we encourage our community to reflect on the significant impact of kin and alternate caregivers—and to consider how we can continue to support them through our daily practice.

Thank you to all the caregivers, professionals, and community members who work together to support the well-being of children and youth.
