From October 20-24, Ontario’s child welfare sector celebrates National Foster Family Appreciation Week, recognizing the incredible dedication and contributions of foster caregivers across the province.

When a decision is made that a child cannot safely remain with their primary caregivers, the first priority is to explore placement with kin or kith — individuals who have a meaningful connection to the child. These connections help preserve a sense of continuity and belonging during a time of significant upheaval.

When kin and kith placements are not available, we turn to our dedicated foster caregivers. Foster families provide temporary care in a supportive, family-based setting, helping children maintain important ties to their schools, friends, neighbourhoods, and cultural communities.

Our York Region foster caregivers play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of children and youth during difficult times. Their commitment helps us create stable, nurturing environments that prioritize the child’s best interests, while we work towards reunification or another permanent plan.

This week, we extend our deepest gratitude to each of our foster caregivers for the difference they make—every day—in the lives of the children, youth, and families we service.
