From September 14 to 18, 2026, York Region CAS joins child welfare agencies across Ontario in recognizing Kinship and Alternate Care Awareness Week. This important week is an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the relatives, extended family members, friends, and community members who step forward to support children, youth, and families when additional care is needed.
Kinship and alternate care play a vital role in helping children and youth maintain meaningful connections to their family, culture, identity, and community. These relationships provide a strong sense of belonging and continuity during times of change and uncertainty. Whether helping families stay connected or providing care when a child or youth cannot safely remain at home, kinship and alternate caregivers offer stability, compassion, and support when it matters most.
This week also raises awareness about the many forms of kinship and alternate care and the positive impact these arrangements have on the wellbeing of children and youth. Research continues to show that strong family and community networks contribute to positive outcomes, while preserving the connections that are essential to a child’s identity, development, and overall sense of belonging.
At York Region CAS, we recognize that the foundation of our work is built on relationships and community. We are deeply grateful to the kinship and alternate caregivers who open their homes and hearts to support children and youth, as well as to the families, staff, and community partners who help strengthen these connections every day.
As we recognize Kinship and Alternate Care Awareness Week, we encourage our community to learn more about the important role that kin and community members play in the lives of children and youth. Their dedication helps create safe, supportive environments, strengthen family and cultural connections, and build brighter futures for the families we serve.
Thank you to all kinship and alternate caregivers, and to everyone who works alongside them, for the care, commitment, and support you provide to children, youth, and families throughout our community.
