For over 20 years, Beulah Osei has been serving as a volunteer driver for the York Region Children’s Aid Society.
York Region CAS had the opportunity to interview Beulah as she answered the questions below:
Why did you choose to volunteer?
To give back to my community as a positive role model for Children and Youth; to provide unbiased support to families in need and to make a difference in a child’s life
What do you feel has been the impact of volunteering on child-wellbeing?
First and foremost; to allow the child to be the best version of them-self, to build trust and boost their self-esteem, reduce stress and provide consistent stability, set goals, and form lasting bonds.
How would you encourage others thinking about volunteering to do it?
Be motivated, committed, and caring. Our community needs volunteers. Make a phone call to the Agency of your choice; ask questions in the Community and research the Agency’s best practices, to gain a sense of pride and accomplishment being affiliated with a superb Child Protection Agency; knowing that you can have a positive impact on a child’s overall wellbeing.
What is your favourite part about volunteering?
To see the relaxation and smile on a child’s face knowing that by just being present I have reduced a child’s stress level or boosted their confidence. I love to hear a child’s or youth’s voice with so many positive stories. Playing the ‘I Spy’ games, or having sing-alongs bring rewarding lasting memories and a great sense of satisfaction. Knowing that I have made a difference in a child’s life is a huge accomplishment. I have a sense of pride and honour to be part of an amazing caring team at York CAS.
We would like to thank Beulah and all of our volunteers for their continuous efforts in leaving a positive impact for the lives of the children, youth and families that we serve.
