March 8, 2026, marks International Women’s Day (IWD) – a global celebration of the achievements, contributions, and resilience of women, and a reminder of the ongoing work needed to advance gender equality in all areas of society.

A Brief History of International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day traces its origins to the early 20th‑century labour movements in North America and Europe, where women organized for fair wages, better working conditions, and the right to vote. The first official observance took place on March 19, 1911, with more than a million people participating in rallies across Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

In 1975, the United Nations designated March 8 as International Women’s Day, cementing its role as a global call for unity, advocacy, and meaningful action toward gender equity.

Canada Marks 50 Years of Progress

In 1976, the advocacy of Canadian women and community groups led to the establishment of what was then Status of Women Canada, now known as the Department for Women and Gender Equality. This 50‑year milestone honours decades of progress while acknowledging the continued collective effort required to create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

This year’s theme, Give to Gain, encourages individuals and organizations to take concrete steps that advance gender equality – because when we uplift women, we strengthen our communities and our society as a whole.
