September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, build understanding, and strengthen support for individuals and families affected by FASD. September 9 is also recognized internationally as FASD Awareness Day, first established in 1999 to highlight the importance of an alcohol-free pregnancy throughout all nine months.

FASD is a lifelong disability that affects the brain and body of people who were exposed to alcohol during pregnancy. Every individual with FASD has unique strengths and challenges and may require specialized supports to help them thrive in different areas of daily life.

This year’s FASD Awareness Month theme is, “Everyone Plays a Part: It Takes a Community”. The theme highlights the collective role we all play in creating supportive, inclusive environments where individuals with FASD and their families can succeed. Community extends beyond professionals to include families, friends, neighbours, schools, workplaces, and community organizations. By learning more, supporting one another, and sharing knowledge, we strengthen the networks that help individuals with FASD thrive.

Supporting healthy pregnancies and reducing alcohol-exposed pregnancies is also a shared responsibility. CanFASD emphasizes that prevention involves understanding the broader social factors that can influence alcohol use during pregnancy, including access to healthcare, housing, trauma, stress, and social supports. Through awareness, compassionate conversations, and inclusive practices, we can all contribute to healthier outcomes.

We encourage our community to show your support by wearing red on September 9 and participating in awareness activities throughout the month. You can also join the national conversation by sharing information on social media using the hashtags #FASDMonth and #RedShoesRock. Wearing red shoes or red clothing has become a recognized symbol of strength, awareness, and advocacy for individuals impacted by FASD.

Together, let’s take this opportunity to learn, raise awareness, and play our part in supporting individuals and families impacted by FASD.
