ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEER OPORTUNITIES
Driver-Escort: The volunteer is responsible
for taking children and parents to and from medical and behaviour
appointments, groups, visits etc. A reimbursement is given
for kilometers driven.
Special Friends: The volunteer develops a
close relationship with a child under the supervision of the
worker, helping to increase his/her trust and self-esteem.
The volunteer also provides friendship, encouragement, support
and guidance in the child’s school or social life. Special
Friends can also be assigned to parents.
Tutor: The volunteer meets with the child,
and helps the child enhance their academic abilities and assists
in the areas where help is needed.
Administrative Support: The volunteer assists
with the reception area, mailings, filing, and a variety of
other short-term as well as on-going tasks.
The Christmas Program: This non-denominational
program benefits children and families with whom the Society
works in the community. Through the generosity of community
donors, volunteers and staff, new toys, clothing and food
have been provided to many thousands of children and their
families over the years.
Public Relations and Special Events: Volunteers
attend special events throughout the region to raise awareness
and assist with the festivities.
Orientation and Training
All volunteers must attend an orientation session before they
receive an assignment. This orientation gives the volunteer
a thorough understanding of the services offered by the Society,
as well as an opportunity for the volunteer to further consider
their role in the agency.
All volunteers receive a copy of the Volunteer Manual. Volunteers
who participate in the Driver-Escort, Special Friends or Tutoring
program are provided with additional training.
